Lost between piracy and stealing

Posted by: Nizar on: September 29, 2007

A guy that I know (we will name him Mike) went to a video games store and bought a video game that cost 600 KR (943 USD), after buying it he opened the box, took the CD-Key, closed the box and returned it later to the shop and said the game didn’t work on his computer and got his money back.

By doing this he got the CD-Key which is what you need for playing the game plus enjoying some features like multilayer online gaming mode for free.

So my friend got really excited about that and thought of doing the same thing, so I warned him that this is stealing and that you can’t do so because you are getting something that you should be paying for.

The discussion continued among us for at least 2 hours and his excuse was that everybody does that, don’t you download music, TV-shows, movies? don’t you have windows, Photoshop, anti-virus or a video converter installed on your computer using a crack or a key gen? The only difference between file sharing and doing what the other guy did is that there is no physical contact between the demander and the supplier.

The qestion is:

Do you see any difference between file sharing and what Mike did?

If you don’t think that file sharing and what mike did is the same, explain to us why do you think so, what is the difference?

I guess it’s easier when you don’t have direct contact with the supplier. And file sharing is not the same as what “mike” did.

Thanks a lot Deemco for your input, now I can show my friend that I’m not the only one that thinks that file sharing and what mike did is not the same.

But can you tell me why you think so, why aren’t they the same thing or what is the difference.

file sharing is not piracy. its sharing.. and you know what they say: sharing is caring :)

No. That is absolutly evil.

Yes, since…
A: Mike didn’t just steal the serial, he also damaged the product and cost the store money. And, suppose he was caught, the store wouldn’t allow others to return even though their products didn’t really work!
B: Serials of the net can’t be used for online gaming, but ones out of a case are unique and can be used for online gaming.

The two ways are different, but how much different? They are both illegal and unethical.

Bakkouz:
LOL, I like what they say :D

Khaled:
That’s true, I agree with you, plus that when you do what mike did you get a unique CD-key that no body shares with you and someone should have paid for it, but when you file share you use a cd-key that someone has already paid for.

Adel:
That’s true as well, so you have never done any of them?

There is no difference between piracy and physical stealing. It’s exactly the same thing. And viewed in the eyes of the law the same way.

yare yare, games are different since you are actually paying for the extra features in a way (which still doesnt justify the price tag but atleast its more reasonable) on the other hand file sharing is just so much easier for highly fudged products that cost an arm and a leg.
So its just a matter of personal ethics if you feel like you are being ripped off, then return the favour and rip them off. on the other hand support the ones that are worth it.
And qwaider ! stop spouting that RIAA crap, physical stealing is different than piracy one can be deterred the other cant be MUWAHAHA

Mike’s case in addition to the above points damages the interest of the poor guy who will actually buy that particular CD, because, if the CD key is used by a number of different users it will be banned from the online features features…
